Although the Divinity franchise has long had a strong following of players, stemming from the success of 2002’s Divine Divinity , the series saw a triumphant return in 2014. Divinity: Original Sin , a prequel to the original game, received release due to the partial funding of Kickstarter backers, and long-term fans of the series who invested in the project were not disappointed. The brand new game fitted in well with the themes and world of the original series, and earned itself strong sales and award nominations in the process. Overall, then, it seems as though Larian Studios has strengthened upon what made the original Divinity: Original Sin work, all the while tweaking moments to make it more compelling for audiences. There are still some questions to be asked, such as exactly how this newfound tone manages to bring it in line with the narrative of Divinity in general, but the developer certainly seems to be on the right track. The first thing a player must do in the campaign for Divinity: Original Sin II is either select an Origin character or create a new character. There are technically eight races to choose, though that number is slightly inflated because of the Undead. The options are Human, Elf, Dwarf, Lizard and the Undead versions of each of these classes. Dwarfs are sturdy and begin with talents that contribute to vitality, dodging and sneaking. Elves gain bonuses to lore and may gain the memories of the dead by eating their corpses (yum!). Humans gain bonuses to critical chances, initiative and bartering. Lizards gain resistance to heat and poison and persuasion and have a useful function of being able to dig up secrets without a shovel. All Undead have the undead talent which causes healing items to harm them and poison to heal them and one of the other traits associated with their race when they were alive, plus they can also attempt to pick locks with their bony fingers and no other tools.
In order to keep his attitude positive towards the player, make sure to never accidentally use a healing potion or spell on him because it will harm him. One of Fane’s colleagues in Arx will try to persuade him to become Divine so he can restore his species, but the player character will need to persuade him otherwise at the Crypt of Lucian.
