Towards the end of the showcase, EA showed off some very early next-gen development footage from EA’s first-party development studios like BioWare, Criterion, and DICE. “Our studios are taking their crazy, ambitious ideas and making them real,” stated Miele. “Every console generation DICE sets the bar for excellence in audio and visual presentation. EA Play’s last few moments, at least before the announcement of Skate ‘s return, did show off some prototype gameplay of what appeared to be a Battlefield game. It’s unclear if it was specifically Battlefield 6 , as it showed what looked like World War II soldiers running across an untextured plane. This was likely a re-use of assets in a new/repurposed development environment, so it’s not indicative of a World War II setting or the final product by any means. Modern military combat is more popular nowadays compared to historical shooters and the over-saturation of futuristic shooters. Though it’s important to note that time period is not going to be the inherent savior of the Battlefield franchise. Most fans would likely argue that World War 2 was not the breaking point for Battlefield 5 , but the severe balancing issues and the content delays were more detrimental. Pair this with the extremely ambitious content plan that was more ironed out than the gameplay itself, and Battlefield 5 ‘s slow and unfortunate passing was sad to see . There’s a few options for which setting Battlefield could go next, but the most likely setting is a modern day conflict. A few leaks and rumors on the internet have come out regarding Battlefield 6 , all of which seem to agree the shooter is returning to a contemporary time period. For a series that’s done both historical time periods as well as modern war settings, there’s definitely positive and negative points for a modern setting if true. Insider Tom Henderson, who has previously shared accurate information about the latest Modern Warfare and Black Ops releases before release, is now dropping reveals about the next Battlefield game set to be released sometime in 2021 . Replying to user Usman, who tweeted about his own love and nostalgia for Battlefield 3 , Henderson replied saying, “you’ll be a happy bunny next year then” with a little smiley face for his followers.
